Method notes
- Counts are open public schools in the NCES Common Core of Data school directory for 2024-25. Charter share and virtual share are schools flagged charter, or exclusively or primarily virtual, divided by all open schools.
- Website coverage is the share of schools with a website recorded in the directory. It depends on how each state reports; a low figure is a reporting gap, not a statement about the schools.
- Average school size is students (where NCES reports enrolment) divided by all open schools, so states with missing enrolment look smaller.
- Districts per 100k students counts districts and agencies that operate at least one school. Hawaii, DC and Puerto Rico run one statewide or citywide system, so their figures are structural.
- Rankings describe reported data and can change when NCES revises it.
